D.A.P. to welcome new fundraising executive

Su Knollenberg

Sue Knollenberg starts May 26th at Desert Aids Project

Sue Knollenberg, CFRE, will be joining Desert AIDS Project on May 26 as Director of Resource Development. She is one of less than 4,600 people in the U.S. who has earned the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) designation, the only internationally-recognized baseline professional credential for philanthropic fundraising executives. With her 21-year tenure in development, Sue's experience includes corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, and leading a capital campaign. Her past focus on community health care and health care foundations is what drew her to Desert AIDS Project.

"We're so excited that Sue is joining us. Her health care background is highly appropriate to some of the new goals D.A.P. has set for itself," said David Brinkman, Executive Director. "As we continue to expand our services to meet the needs of the 400+ new clients projected annually for the next few years, we must look to new and different ways to sustain ourselves financially. I think Sue's skill set will be invaluable in implementing those plans."

Sue is a native of Minnesota and moved to Palm Desert in February 2008 to assume the position of Executive Director of Development at University of California - Riverside's Palm Desert Graduate Center. Outside of the office, Sue's interests include yoga and learning more about desert gardening to beautify the landscape around the home she shares with her partner, Marsha, and their two dogs.

Desert AIDS Project is the organization in our community where people living with HIV and AIDS can receive comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services. D.A.P. also offers confidential HIV testing at a number of locations and widespread education and prevention services for schools, civic organizations, businesses, churches, and health organizations throughout the communities it serves. Rick Landry Dog Park officially opens

Rick Landry Dog Park Opening

Councilmember Ginny Foat (far left) and  D.A.P. Executive Director (far right) hold the ceremonial ribbon for Flo Greany to cut, opening the new dog park at the Rick Weiss Apartments dedicated to the memory of her son, Rick Landry, as his sisters and donor Michael Leppen look on.

Even with scorching temperatures, healthier and prettier pooches ruled on Saturday morning, May 16 at the Rick Weiss Apartments on the campus of Desert AIDS Project when the Rick Landry Dog Park was dedicated. Dr. Doug Kunz and his team of veterinarian service providers gave shots and check-ups while Scott Mueller worked out of his Red Rover Pet Grooming mobile salon.

Tents provided shade for all present as Palm Springs City Councilmember Ginny Foat read a framed proclamation that was presented to both the family of Rick Landry and to Michael Leppen, the generous donor who provided the funds to build the new dog park. Flo Greany, Landry's mother, spoke movingly of her son and how fitting that his life should be marked with a place dedicated to the animals that he loved so much. Added Leppen, "I never knew Rick Landry personally but I have long had the pleasure of knowing his wonderful mother. I am so happy to be here with her and Rick's sisters, Tish and Chris, today as we honor his memory."

Following a delicious lunch by New Leaf Catering, client pets continued to receive complimentary veterinarian and grooming services while others strolled through the new, beautifully landscaped dog park, complete with gravel paths, benches under shady pergolas, and a three-tiered fountain near a large watering bowl where fresh water is always available for these lucky dogs.

D.A.P. is so grateful for the generosity of Michael Leppen for making this wonderful new amenity possible at the Rick Weiss Apartments. We'd also like to thank Dr. Kunz and his helpers, Scott Mueller of Red Rover, PETCO, Classic Party Rentals, and Welner Ayala.
