(PALM SPRINGS, CA – July 2, 2008)
Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., widely recognized for his international leadership in HIV/AIDS research has agreed to accept the Silver Anniversary Science and Medicine Award on February 21, 2009 when the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards return to the Palm Springs Convention Center. Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID,) was recently honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civil award, at a White House ceremony on June 19.
“We’re very excited to be able to honor such a pioneer. Dr. Fauci has studied HIV/AIDS and treated HIV-infected patients since the early days of the pandemic,” said David Brinkman, executive director of Desert AIDS Project. “Next month, D.A.P. begins its 25th year of service to the care and prevention of HIV. Dr. Fauci’s commitment will continue to be an inspiration to us as we embark upon our second quarter-century.”
Desert AIDS Project is the organization in our community where people living with HIV and AIDS can receive comprehensive support, including medical care, case management, and social services. D.A.P. also offers confidential HIV testing at a number of locations and widespread education and prevention services for schools, civic organizations, businesses, churches, and health organizations throughout the communities it serves.
